Sovtek 5881 in Hot Rod 50+
Post by SlyFox on Dec 5th, 2016, 09:56am

I'm going to try 5881s in my HR50+ very soon and just want to be sure they are well suited for this amp because I've read some different opinions about high plate voltage and using 5881.

I don't know that it means by the WXT - just wishing to clarify.

Lastly - would one find the 5881 a little smoother and warmer than a 6L6GC?

Wow, quiet around here...

I tried the 5881 and I'm a fan. Seemed to add more depth and smooth out the highs a little.

Sovtek 5881/6L6WGC's are the original tube for all Soldano amps except the Astroverb which uses Sovtek EL84 tubes.

WXT's have a taller base and are a very tight fit. Don't use these, can't replace very well if chassis is in head shell.

5881's are manufactured by Sovtek which is owned by Mike Matthews of Electro-Harmonix. He also owns Tung Sol, Gold Lion, EH, etc., built in his Svetlana Russian plant. NO, this is NOT the original JSC Winged C plant. They went out of business January 14'.

5881 is a 19 watt tube. Guaranteed to 350 plate volts with 100% overload or 700 plate volts. Mike biases a little cold and for very good reasons. TUBE LIFE. I run all mine at 27-28 milliamps per tube. I've had quads in my amps for years no issues.

At modest to loud volumes, you will not be able to tell much difference in any similar tubes. I've tested all in the studio and most are the same. Save your money, go Sovtek and be done. You'll get WAY more changes in speaker cabinets versus a tube change.
