So what are you using for cabinets ??
Post by bluefish on Oct 31st, 2004, 11:10am

At band practice last night I ran my Avenger through a Bad Cat 2x12 ( G12H + V30) . Wow !! Big big improvement over the Soldano 2x12 with the Eminence speakers.

I am trying to figure out if I try swapping the speakers in the Soldano cabinet for V30s or just try something new ?

What's everyone using ?

I did a search on the site and came up with this thread.

http://soldano.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&num=1076530069

Maybe that will help out. I'd like to see a discussion on cabinets and speakers as well. I have a 5150 cab and a Carvin Legacy cab. I have grown to like the Legacy cab much better. It is loaded with V30 modeled speakers.

I'm wanting to get another speaker cab. I'm sort of leaning towards a soldano cab, but I'm really not sure.

I'd like to hear others opinions on it. What's the difference, tonally, in a cab loaded with V30s and the Soldano cabs?

I have been using two Genz Benz G-Flex cabs both loaded with a combo of one Celestion 75 and a Celestion vintage 30. With the ports on the cabs it sounds huge and mean!

Best wishes,

Thanks for the link.

I swapped the speakers in my Soldano cabinet with a G12H+V30 as I am famillar with that combination. Big difference. I will keep the cabinet.

To my ear with the speaker swap it is more detailed, tighter and agressive. Sounds like someone took the blanket off. It is also feels about 10lbs heavier which might be the only bad thing !!

On the plus side I believe the Eminence speakers are better with brighter guitars or amps.

I've got a Marshall 1960A and a Johnson 4x12 (angled), both loaded with V30's, but I think the Johnson (made by Digitech for their Millennium series modeling amps) sounds much better. It's a lot like a Soldano 4x12. It's front loaded with a sealed rear, and it's a little smaller than a Marshall. When pushed hard, the bottom end on the Johnson is a little tighter than the Marshall. It doesn't get so flabby when I'm playing D-tuned or baritone. The mids and low-mids cut through better, and yet they're easier on the ears. Digitech discontinued the Johnson line, but occasionally you can find these cabinets (loaded with V30's) for about the same price you would pay for a quad of V30's

I use two oversized straight front boogie cabs. When I first got the cabs, they were a little stiff, but they sound way better now. At high performance volumes the handle everything the SLO can throw at them. Great punch and prescence in the mix.

Bluefish, would you say the soldano cabinet wasn't as bright or trebly as a cab with the V30s? Would you describe it as more mids or more bass?

I only have two comparisons and that is between the Carvin Legacy and the 5150 cabs. The 5150 sounded a bit fuller, but had this raspiness (term used by bstark and I think it applies). It was also a bit darker sounding. I've gotten to where I just don't like it.

All three of the Soldano amps I've auditioned (SLO 100, Decatone, and Hot Rod 50) have been played through the same stock Soldano 4 x 12 slant cabinet loaded with Eminence Legend 30's. The only other cabinet available in the sound room (that wasn't being used) was a Mesa Boogie (slant) 4 x 12 loaded with Vintage 30's. I'm not sure if this was a "bad" cabinet, (maybe that's why nobody else was using it, ha ha) but he SLO 100 sounded like dog poo through this particular 4 x 12. I didn't bother trying the other two amps through it. I actually quite liked the stock cabinet with all three amps.

68 Marshall 4x12 with G12H30 and Vintage 30s

BIG tone monster.

I have a 79 Marshall 4x12 too and it is real close to the 68. The newer Marshall cabs for me just don't get it ..... like the last 10 years worth.

I personally don't like the 5150 cab either. I too hear the raspiness and also find it a little sterile.

To my ear the stock Eminence vs the V30.... the Eminence is smoother. The V30 has more "upper mid", simillar bass and a completely difference treble response. The V30 is more immediate ( probably the mids).

I would say the highs/treble on the Eminence speaker are not as bright as the V30. But both have equal treble if that makes any sense at all.

I believe the Eminence speaker is 97db sensitivity vs 100db with the V30. Meaning the perceived and real volume is less. The Eminence speaker is not as fatiguing to listen to as the V30 but also not nearly as detailed either.

I pretty much play humbucker guitars only. So all my opinions might be completely wrong with single coils.

Would love to hear that !!!

I played my Avenger through a early 70s Marshall 4x12 with greenbacks and was amazed. I generally don't like greenbacks.. can't imagine how good it would sound with the G12H+V30 combo.

I'm using the Soldano semi-open 2x12 with one Celestion V30 and one Celestion G12T-75. It sounds pretty killer.

When I went to pick up the amp at the store where I ordered it new, I tried it on several cabs. I noticed it was sounding better on the Marshall cabs than the Soldano cabs, until I plugged into a Soldano cab with V30's like the Marshall cabs. Instantly sounded the best... I think the key, for my ear at least, is that the Eminence Legend speakers really blow... they sound really cold and sterile to my ears, especially against the celestions.

My plans are to pick up a Soldano 4x12 with Celestions in an x-config, sometime, whenever I see a decent deal. I'll keep the 2x12, too; I'd like to have them both for different applications (different types of rooms etc).

I'm just gonna paste in my post from harmonycentral about speakers in case it helps....

I am running a Soldano Astroverb into an Avatar 2x12 with a V30 and a G12H30.
I have played and recorded each speaker individually to hear how they compare to each other.

- G12H30 is smooth with plenty of bass and lots of presence.
- V30 is compressed, has TONS of mids, lacks some bass and lacks high presence.
It has a bit of a gritty raspyness that makes power chords grind, but puts buzz in your lead tone if used alone.

The G12H30 sounds louder than the V30- perhaps because of its higher presence output?
It is not a real subtle difference either, the G12H30 is definitely louder than the V30.

I think this perceived volume difference is why the smooth high frequencies of the G12H30 overpower and hide the raspyness of the V30 resulting in a nice smooth lead tone.

But you do still hear the V30's rasp for chords and its additional mids- which go missing with an all G12H30 setup.

The V30 sounds very compressed, like it's under a blanket, but live players say it cuts well in a live situation because of it's mids. I don't know firsthand because I've never been in the audience while I was playing on stage!

I consider the distortion sound of the G12H30 "natural" and the V30 "congested".

I really prefer the G12H30. The V30 is so compressed it sounds like the Marshall channel of my Johnson J Station.

After recording each of the speakers separately I thought that I dont like the V30, but I found out that the G12H30 DOES need to be complimented by the V30 to get that "holy grail" perfect sound- it needs the V30's midrange and grit for high gain chords or "that sound" is just not there.

I would call the clean tone of the G12H30 "warm" and the V30 just "slightly sterile", in comparison, but it's really not that bad.

While the V30 has more midrange than other speakers, I really think the biggest difference from other speakers is that it has MUCH LESS presence.

My comparisons were done at a high bedroom volume- and so is the majority of my playing.

So I would be kind of surprised if there is any better speaker combination than V30 + G12H30 because they compliment each other perfectly.

The G12H30 gives you smoothness and the presence and bass that the V30 lacks and
the V30 gives you a little grit for chords, yet its gritty lead tone is covered by the G12H30's smooth lead tone due to having more presence than the V30.

I would also recommend Weber beam blockers for for all of them, but that may just be my personal taste.

I use a variety of cabs (Voodoo & Bogner 4x12's, Bogner 2x12, and 2 Bogner cubes). Right now the HR50 is running through the cubes and it sounds fantastic IMHO.

I think this is my first post on this forum. Anyway, I first ran my Avenger through a Marshall 1960 AX re-issue 25 watt, it sounded ok, but definitely would get muddy. Next, I used the real deal of the same cabinet from 1972. This sounded great, but I still thought the Avenger could sound even better. Enter the VHT 2x12 Fatbottom - Unbelievable. The Avenger through this bottom is the heaviest sound I've heard. I did not try the VHT 4x12 Fatbottom, but this 2x12 smoked the standard VHT 4x12 hands down. I don't know about the other Soldano's, but the Avenger never sounded better - killer!! grin

Good to know! I've always wanted to try a VHT fatbottom cab. Did it have the P50E eminences in it? I hear they are basically eminence legends, which are what soldano puts in their cabs, though some say they are quite different and not the same speaker at all.

I have the P50E eminences, which I think is what VHT currently uses in the Fatbottom. I really don't know what the hell they do to make the "Fatbottom" so crushing, but it really is. I was thinking my Avenger could not get "heavy" enough, before I went to another highgain head, I tried this 2x12 I can't believe how awsome the Avenger sounds. I can honestly say now my Avenger lives up to all the hype behind it!! I don't know too much about Soldano cabs, but it would be great if they had a cab like this.
Re: So what are you using for cabinets ??

I have used old Marshall cabs with GB's "all years", and still think these cabs are just "it".
Big, greasy, crunchy, woody and crispy tones, suits the SLO just great.
I've tried out or used some other cabs as well, like Bogner 412's, newer Marshalls (V-30's, 75's), Soldano 412's (V-30, G12H-30 or old GB's), Matchless, etc....
Still, I favour the old Marshalls for better "tone".

Btw, Soldano also makes great cabs. I still have a slant 412 with GB's (sold off another), which is good.
But the old Marshalls are always used as the "No-1" cabs.

Okay thanks. There is another 2x12 listed(diagonal) on BCM site under Soldano cabs as HR 25.Also on the HR25video. Mike points it out. According to the site specs cab still measures same as Soldano 4x12. Very interesting if you're on a budget and you have your speakers. Wondering how it would compare sound wise? Criteria being 1.sound quality.2.build. 3. Taller cab(not a must, just a plus! Not currently shopping just intrigued about this taller(off the ground) 2x12.

2x12's are great, especially as I'm getting older. I still have my Marshall 1960A 4x12 with a couple of Eminence legends in it, but it's been years since it has left my house. I'm loving the sound I'm getting from the ADA cab. USA built from some nice ply from back in the day, and I'm very happy with it. Plus , I love how it is a vertical 2x12.

I've owned or played just about all available cabs out there and almost every customer coming by way that plays his or hers "Nirvana" cabinet, always comes back to the stock Eminence V12 Legends. Me included.

I do run a custom 2x12" ISO cabinet with WGS AlNiCo and Ceramic combo which works great with everything, but the straight up Soldano cab is still the best.

For my SLO's, I use the Lucky 13 4x12 cab. Got a stupid great deal on a brand new in the box straight cab, so I got that rather than the SLO cab. Sounds perfect with the SLOs.

For my '78 Marshall and Mojave Peacemaker, I use a '76 Marshall B cab with '78 Celestion G12H30 speakers.

For my Budda SD18 and 45 I use the Budda 2x12 closed back cab with stock speakers.

And the Atomic 16 4x10 comes with stock speakers from Soldano, whatever those are, in an open back setup.

Baltic Birch (18mm) all the way around, metal grill, front loaded and sealed like no other cab i've owned. It's a HEAVY mother father, but it's got great tight lows and very little of the nasally mid spike often associated with V30's.
