Question for TU BE
Post by solosun on Feb 10th, 2004, 1:54pm

My experience today with an Avenger wasn't very good. It had some bad preamp tubes. Very noisey and with the gain cranked the bass seemed kind of mushy even with the depth turned back. Dealer changed out some tubes but I think thre was one left in that still needed changing. I didn't have time to get fully involved with the amp.

Do you have a clip with the gain maxed and is your Avenger super noisey? I have a feeling this amp might be perfect for my needs but unfortunately the one I tried was a bit off.

Thanks for any inupt you can give.

Hey, what's up?

When I got my Avenger, it still had the stock preamp tubes in it and, yeah, it was kind of noisy. I immediately threw some Electro-Harmonix 12ax7's in it. That helped ALOT with the noise. Now it's got no more noise than any other high gainers I have heard.

Also, about the "mushiness", the only thing I can think is maybe it was the cab or speakers you were playing it through. Mine does not get mushy at all. I play mine through a Celestion Greenback loaded cab and have never pulled a tone out of it that did not sound good.

As far as maxing the gain, I have done it but it was WAY MORE gain than I would think anyone would ever need. I prefer the gain knob between 6 and 9 even for the heaviest of metals.

HTH. Anymore huh's just let me know. smiley

Thanks for the info. I have a feeling with some better premap tubes it will be just as you say. A very good high gainer.

Yeah, you also need to make sure you're playing it out of a good cab with some good speakers. These are the two most overlooked but one of the most vital to your tone.

Don't let it just being one channel fool you. It's a VERY versatile one channel amp. Not footswitch versatile, mind you , but if you don't mind tweaking knobs (which I personally enjoy alot wink) then there are many, many tones to be had there. Far from a one trick pony IMHO. Check out the new clip of it I just posted.

I plan to run it through a 1960AV or a Gflex 212. I guess I'll find out soon enough, just ordered one. I'll pick up some JJecc83s' just in case. Thanks for your help.

Ohhh! I expect clips. smiley
Should sound nice with the G Flex for heavier stuff.
Is the 1960AV loaded with Greenbacks or V30?

V30's. I hope it gets here soon, at least before the weekend.

It's gonna be cool to have someone to exchange settings with. cool

The JJ's should work great. Actually, I think Soldano started using a JJ ecc83 in the V1 to help cutback on some noise. They are still using sovs int he other preamp slots though so...................

Definitely. Send me some of your best settings whenever you have a chance then all I'll need to do is plug and play. Thanks.

The Avenger arrived today and am I glad I gave it a second chance. This one sounds fantastic. Much less noise and loud as hell.

Tried it with an EMG 81 and the Bass was booming and super tight. Leads sound awesome, harmonics just jump right out, tons of gain, and it has a great look too.
Won't have a chance to do too much tonight but will spend a lot of time with it this weekend. Going to A/B it at a friends house who's got a bunch of amps on hand.
