Astroverb?
Post by mihaly88 on Feb 9th, 2004, 06:17am

Hey Guys,

I am on a budget, but would like a Soldano Tube amp... I love the Avenger/SLO overdrive sound, but dont want to dish out more the $1,000... I have been looking at Astroverb heads, do you like these? Obviously at 20 watts I can get good power tube saturation at low volumes?

Please reply soon,

Mihaly

Hello. I have never played an Astroverb in person but have heard clips of one a few times. It's a great sounding amp, but the OD channel sounds a bit different than the SLO or Avenger. If you like these two amp then you should maybe check into a used HR50. If you need a clean channel the HR50 + has one on it. You can usually find them used for about $700-$900.

I'm in no way trying to steer you away from the Astroverb because what I've heard of it sounds great. But I'm not sure you'll be completely happy with one if SLO type overdrive is what you seek.

Welcome to the forum. smiley

Thanks for the advice... I AM in search of Avenger/SLO overdrive... And after a bit of research I have realized that though Im sure the Astroverb is a great amp, it is more like the crunch section of the clean channel of the SLO instead of the Overdrive... Which is what I want... The HotRods are a bit expensive still though sad The Avenger might even be a better option for me... but I DO NOT want to buy off of EBay...
Any suggestions?

I have never played one, but I always thought they were lower gain amps. More like the clean channel on the SLO, maybe?
For high gain, I recommend looking for a HR50. Unfortunately, I think Ebay is your best bet. I did a search on finished auctions just yesterday... there was HR50+ with case for $860!
How much do you want to spend?

The astroverb is not the same as the lead channel of the SLO. It's like the crunch channel, but with a bit more gain (or maybe that's from getting the power tubes working sooner?). For under $1000, your only choices are the Hot Rods, a steal on a used Avenger, or an SP-77 with a poweramp.
