Which tubes?
Post by Leonardo on Feb 9th, 2004, 12:19am

Have anyone experienced with different tubes on a Soldano?
I bought four RFT ECC83 for my HR50, but honestly... it didn't make much difference. It had stock Soldano branded 12AX7 tubes (probably Sovtek?). I left a RFT in V1 anyways.
I didn't bothered trying them on the DSL401 to see if improves the tone. I may try that...
Do you think it's worth going the NOS route on Soldano amps?
The only tubes I feel like trying are the russian KT66. They are a little pricey, though.

Discuss. grin

I haven't found too much difference swapping valves in high gain amps to be honest. I even tried swapping the preamp valves in my plexi, but I couldn't tell that much difference. I recorded a clip with the existing marshall valves and then another with the NOS valves, panned each clip to either side. Listened to it and changed sides so you could hear any tonal differences and there wasn't that much change at all.

I've presumed that since the plexi has a fairly "pure" signal path then the valve change would be more noticeable in that as opposed to my hot rod or road king.

Incidently, I could tell the difference more changing the valve in my vox tonelab!!!! %20huh

I'd agee with Big Hair that it's pretty minimal differences in a modern high gain head. Also, many NOS preamp tubes are microphonic with the gains in a Soldano. It's not a problem with a vintage amp.

I put a set of EH 12AX7s in my SLO and they're fine. I'm actually thinking about trying a lower gain tube in V1 or V2, but haven't gotten around to it.

I don't really use that much gain, so I thought the difference would be bigger...
That's good though, less money buying different NOS tubes to try. Next time I will just grab some JJ or Shuguang tubes...
Any experience with KT66?
