xx Channel bleed, vactrols and relays
« Thread started on: Aug 29th, 2016, 10:52am »

Hi all, I am considering modding my main SLO to get rid of the infamous channel bleed. If I use the crunch channel I'm running it wide open with the crunch switch engaged so that really has an impact on the leadchannel when I switch to that.

I seem to remember there was a thread about that particular subject but I haven't been able to find it. Anybody can help with that ?

A short while ago I read an article somewhere where they spoke about an upgraded/changed powersupply that supposedly was needed to power the relay(s) that have to be fitted instead of the Vactrols.
Anyone has more insight in that ?

I'm trying to do my howework as good as possible before diving in.

Thanks !

Not sure about all the technical stuff you're referring to....but, about 6 or 7 years ago I had Bill Sundt (was at Soldano at the time) remove the Haynes Mod, on one of my SLO's, and use that switch as a "Normal Channel Cut Mod" (my naming & description). I'm not sure what exactly he did, but it did seem to "remove" the bleed over and make the OD channel a little clearer...just like when you have the Normal switch to Clean and the Normal Preamp gain dialed back.

You might just call Mike at Soldano. He's easy to talk to and cold probably offer you a solution/Mod.

You won't like the results. Of all the custom single and dual over drive SLO's I built, BG had one, the loss of the Crunch Channel and it's bleed makes the amp much less dynamic almost sterile at times.

Was this bleed designed this way? Partially. Mikey stumbled upon it when he first designed it, then decided to make it better.

Change is not always better.

Thanks JLB, apparently we appreciate things differently.

I tend to run the amp with crunch-channel gain at zero as long as I don't need that channel to get the same net result as replacing the vactrols = no bleed and I like that much better. Nothing sterile to my ears anyway smiley

Good luck buddy. It's your ears that matter. You may very well dig it, so go for it. I'm just giving you the statistics for what they are worth, and every single or dual over drive SLO I've had built was either returned to originality or sold. Rock on....
