xx favorite 6L6 for SLO?
« Thread started on: Feb 9th, 2016, 1:57pm »

The time has come for new power tubes and biasing for my beloved SLO. I know this question gets asked a lot, but things change, new sh!t comes out etc.

So, what are people digging these days?

I've experimented with NOS Sylvania 6L6s and the original Sovtek 5881s. I'm about due for new tubes as well, and to be honest I'm fine just going with the Sovteks. Plus they last a long time and they're less expensive than some others.

Yeah, I've tried several types also (mainly JJ's though) thinking "I'm not going to use Sovteks because they're all shite" and kept running into the problem that I had kind of cloudy, overbearing low-mids.

I then decided to give the Sovteks a try and voilá, bye bye cloud and welcome nice and even freq.response. On top of that they are reliable as f**k, cheap and look kinda cool I think.

If they are good enough for Mr. Soldano himself and (f.i.) Warren Haynes they'll sure be good enough for me grin

The exact same thing happened with my Cornford MK50 btw.

So yeah, save your money....

I used to not like the Sovtek 5881's.....and to be honest I don't know why I couldn't get a good sound from them. After I had a JJ tube go apeshit and take out my output transformer, I told myself I was going back to the Sovtek tubes for reliability. And, I found that I liked what I heard. I am running different speakers nowadays, and that may play a part. They don't do any one thing exceptionally well, but the don't do anything bad. A good well rounded tube and super reliable.

I've tried a few others and wound up going back to the Sovteks as well. Winged C's were decent but they're overpriced and in short supply.

I stuck to the Sovteks for my power tube change, too. In fact I ordered them straight from Soldano, and currently have an extra quad from soldano that I carry to every gig. If it ain't broke............... I'm so happy with my SLO that I'm not looking to change anything.

I hope I'm not being redundant here, but: seeing as how M Soldano has said that the output tubes do not effect tone in an SLO; do you guys just go for the most reliable tubes? And not worry about tone? Or has anyone found that certain tubes do actually sound better than others?

Seems like lots of us are digging the Sovteks. I've used them, I dig them. However, if there are tubes that do in fact sound better I'd be very interested in them--even if they cost a little more. Thanks dudes.

It's simple really; my ears disagree with that particular M. Soldano statement. I definitely can hear tonal differences between different powertubes.

So when I can use a tube that sounds good to my ears and as a bonus is über reliable I'm happy smiley

I'm with Giga , if you can't hear the difference then it's time for a hearing test .
It may not be a major difference until you actually open up the amp to it's sweet spot , but you can easily hear a difference .
If you really want to make a major change in the amps tone , change the speakers .
