xx Soldano 2x12 w/ Eminence Legends - Loud but boring
« Thread started on: Mar 23rd, 2015, 06:57am »

I've had my HR50+ for a very long time now and really enjoyed it with various cab/guitar combos, but since finding a matching Soldano 2x12 I find I can't get happy with my tone.

Partly this has to do with changing guitars also so its hard to work out which has had the bigger effect - I'm playing single coils exclusively now, and its not likely to change (love them too much). I compensate for the brightness with my guitar tone knob and the amps treble set from 2-4. I've tried HBs too and still really feel like the cab has caused me the most grief though.

It sounds too directional and overly loud and punchy but without warmth. I mostly use the normal channel with gain around 5. I've been thinking of changing the speakers for a set of greenbacks, has anyone tried that in a Soldano 2x12?

check out this speaker thread:

and about greenbacks in a soldano 2x12 i'd suggest a pair of higher wattage greenback types like the weber silver bell (warmer GB with big lows and fat mids) or legacy or any of the other makers of GB variants. they'll all give you good lows, smooth mids and highs and nice texture which seems to be what you're after. the soldano cab itself is very high quality, very well constructed, etc. it's just that it seems you would probably prefer a different driver.

i was able to compare the soldano cab to my own cab loaded with the silver bell and legacy. if you use the treble set around 2-4 then, once the webers break in, you'll need to have the treble on 5 or 6 at least. same for your presence. your other controls will prob stay around the same settings you use now.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'm gonna see if I can get my hands on something like that to try.

I did briefly have an open back Avatar cab with Eminence Cannabis Rex's in it, and it sounded similar (too mid forward and not warm enough). Any idea how those stack up to the Webber speakers you mentioned?

I haven't played the can Rex so I can't speak to that one.

I can say that compared to a v30 the upper mids and highs on a silver bell or legacy (or most of the similar speakers like the celestion lynch or cream, and so on) are night and day different. Much softer and warmer. Like an even warmer green back with all the texture but with bigger tighter low end. You'll still sit fine in a band mix just smoother without ear fatigue. And when you want more slice just turn the mids and highs way up!

Also if you get the webers you may want to go for pre-rola doping so the speakers are far more broken in right out the box.
