xx EQ section Tweaking of the HR50 XL
« Thread started on: Feb 19th, 2004, 11:17am »

hello-

for you HR-50 XL owners:

is the EQ section tweakable enough to get a duller high-end and bigger boxier mids?

Instead of getting two amps (Marshall and Soldano), I want the Soldano. I'll use the Soldano sound most of the time , with the option of going Marshall-y.

Sorry to bring up another brand, but the sounds I 've heard from the Engl Fireball seem to be a nice hybrid of Soldano and Marshall. (to my ears) But it can't get the classic Soldano sound.

Perhaps someone with an HR50 XL can make a quickie clip of their best Marshall imitation? Maybe some big power chords and a bit of acrobatic 2-string riffage?

I'd be using this sound as a change of pace on occasion when the song warrants

thanks if you can help

How does a Marshall sounds? You mean like Blackmore, or kinda like Van Halen? Or maybe AC/DC-ish?
Give me an example of 'Marshall tone'.

yes-

think Deep Purple, Old Van Halen, AC/DC

I guess my question could be answered by this: on the HR50XL clips posted, the sound is bright and open and well-defined. This is what I want 80% fo the time. But some of the time I'll want it more punchy and less bright.

would this be a matter of using the other input ? This may be simple

thanks

Soldano amps are bright...that's the trademark Soldano sound.

If you want to darken the tone a little bit, roll off the Treble/Presence, and try some JJs in the pre.

thank you

to be honest, over the past few weeks I've been wavering over getting the HR-50XL new/HR-50 used, and an Engl Fireball or Screamer.

I've pretty much concluded that its gotta be Soldano. I mean I just can't see how the Engl can brighten up and shine like the Soldano. But I can see how the Soldano can be toned down and smoothed out when necessary. I made use of the EQ on my Windows Media player to try rolling off the presence on our comrade's HR50XL clips, and was able to simulate what could be done on the amp itself (hopefully). When I tried the same thing on an Engl Fireball clip in the opposite direction (to brighten it up) to get the Soldano livlieness, it took alot of tweaking and didn't sound even close.

SO thats solved

next quest, the most transparent clean boost for solos and the most transparent Delay, digital, analog , whatever. Just as long as it doesn't kill my tone when its not in use. When it IS in use, I won't care because its like Special FX to me.

Then of course, how to find a new HR-50 XL that isn't in snakesin !

Also, can someone tell me the width in inches of the HR50 ?

thanks for the notes

Alanfc,

I recently picked up an Avenger head. Friend of mine got it but turned out to be a bit too loud for his situation. I just got a Fireball a few weeks ago and when he brought the Avenger over I dug it right away. It was completely different sounding and I loved it right away. It won't replace the Fireball but it sounds awesome in it's own right. Both amps have their own character and that's where I think they both really shine.

I think you're correct that you'll get closer to the Marshall type sound with a Soldano.

I haven't done much tweaking with either the Soldano or Fireball. I'm really happy with the way I have them setup.

From playing this Avenger and comparing it to my other amps including 2 Marshalls it stands out on it's own merit. It's got it's own sound and it sounds great.

I don't think you can go wrong with any Soldano. They sound fantastic.

I had planned to burn some clips of all my heads (7 total through a Gflex 4x12) just to get a feel for how they all sound but I think I broke my workstation. It no longer boots up. Hopefully it will be a quick fix and I can get some clips up soon.

Anyway best of luck with your selection.

hey dirkven!

I think you were the guy that put up the Fireball clips on Harmony Central in response to one of my posts there. They turned out to be the best samples I'd heard and they really helped me alot. I think in the future I will have both, but for now , just the Soldano.

(you have 7 amps ??!!)

look forward to hearing the whole fleet

Yea, I was quite bummed when the workstation went down. I had moved all the equipment around and reorganized my living room and half bath to record.
I just finished the clip of the VH100R when it crashed.
I've been collecting gear for a while with the Avenger and Fireball being new editions...here's the list:

Avenger
Fireball
Vh100R
Gh100TI
JCM Slash
JCM 900 SLX 2500
Mesa Single Recto

I'll be calling Yamaha tomorrow to hopefully sort out the crashed equipment.
