xx Which Power Tubes for a SLO???
« Thread started on: Feb 10th, 2004, 10:06am »

So I'm going to be picking up some new power tubes soon to replace the stock 5881's and thought I'd ask around as to what type/brand to consider.

kt66 tubes seem to be popular lately and from what I understand make the SLO, an already punchy amp, punchier and brighter. Is this a pretty accurate description?

Which 6l6 brands to try? I've heard good things about the Electroharmonix and SED 6l6. Anyone have experience with these brands? Comparisons to Sovtek 6l6 or the stock 5881's? Anything else?

What I'm personally looking for is more chime from the clean channel (which I think is really nice on the SLO especially for a high gainer) and a smoother tone (without losing any gain on the lead channel) and response all around to help tame those highs. Thanks!

Mine came with Phillips 6L6GC's which I believe are what the SLO was originally designed around. I've stayed with them because I like the sound.

Just a data point...

I'd like to try KT-66s sometime, but haven't gotten motivated enough to do it yet.

how would you describe the sound compared with other 6l6's or 5881's?

Since I haven't tried other tubes in the amp, I'm really not in a position to offer any comparisons. I've played other SLO's with other tubes, but with different amps, in different rooms, etc. The difference in sound between power tubes is small enough that I wouldn't trust myself to draw a distinction unless I could do a direct A/B comparison.

Not much help am I!

I don't have an SLO but...

I spoke to a local tech on the phone for about an hour today, just shooting the shit and talking about tubes, tone, and my Hot Rod 100+. I told him that I was interested in loading it with KT-66s (I have 6L6GCs in right now and I don't think I like them) and he suggested that I also check out some more obscure tube types such as 7581s, and 7027As. They are supposed to have slightly more headroom, and rounder bottom end.

Not much help I guess, just food for thought.

The SLO was designed around the 7581A from Philips/Sylvania.

KCA sells 'em, but they're pricy.
