what amp would you play if soldano didn't exist?
Post by dodgyboiler on Jan 18th, 2008, 1:49pm

For me probably a Bogner Ecstasy or back to my old Marshall Anniversary LM. Or maybe a Cornford.

Of course if there had been no Soldano the course of rock amp history would probably be different... maybe that's the subject of another thread!

Cheers.

Probably a Splawn, VHT, or Diezel

But now that I think about it... I would probably still be lost, searching, and unsatisfied for who knows how long if I hadn't come across the Soldanos.

Simple! Bogner &/or Bad Cats but I wouldn't be satisfied...

Bogner Ecstasy. Great amp. I will run it my Soldano some day.

Every high gain amp I played, during my search that eventually led me to Soldano, didn't really to it for me. I'd would have to hit the stores again and go back to playing everything I could.

If you're talking low-gainer amps......I would love to have a early sixties Deluxe Reverb or another Twin Reverb from the same era. A 12000 series Plexi would be cool too.

'Course the amp I use now, a '66 Fender Bassman, as back-up to the Soldano still raises the hair on the back of my neck too. It's no high-gain, crunch monster like the HR, but it's got plenty of tone.

Boosted JCM 800 I think .
Or maybe a THD.

Or one of each!

Actually I could play through a Bogner if they would make a high gain single channel amp. I'm not a big fan of amps with lots of knobs.

Egnater MOD 50. Hands down.

Bogner XTC is also great though and Cameron has potential if he can get his act together.

Wizard Modern Classic 50. One day I will own one. Good enough for Malcolm Young, good enough for me. Apparently they're like an awesome Plexi on the 'clean' channel and soldanoesque on hi gain.. I could handle that.

If Soldano did not exist, I would not know how great the SLO sounds anyway. huh

That being said, I would probably still be playing my '64 Fender Super Reverb. It no where near sounds like my SLO, but with the volume on 10 & a Klon boost, it is a tone machine. I would possibly go back to a Dr. Z Route 66 (also boosted with the Klon of course).

If I ever hear that Soldano is going out of business or selling out, I'm going to buy about twenty SLO-100's because you know those babies would later be worth mega bucks.

Hmm.
Talking of "high-gain" amps...
I've been through many "high gainers", and would have to do another search and try out something new.

So, if the SLO would suddenly not exist, my first step would be to go back to my old Marshalls. Then get a killer OD to push the front end of an old plexi.
I guess I could live with the "next best thing" for a while. wink

If I had never heard the SLO, I would have probably settled on a Bogner Shiva and saved myself some money. That being said, I still have my old JCM-800 with a Barber Direct Drive pushing the front end that still sounds great, just not an SLO. If I had to settle on the Bogner, I'm sure I would have constantly been looking for more. The Cornford Richie Kotzen model sounds absolutely beautiful, but costs more than an SLO and I still prefer the SLO!

I plan on getting a Splawn & sitting it on top of my Decatone smiley If not then I would love to play a Diezel. I've heard clips & they sounded stellar in capable hands.

Lately I've been thinking more about the Mesa Boogie Trem-O-Verb. I borrowed a 2x12 combo for a long period years ago and it was great. I've owned a Triaxis+50/50, Roadster, and Lone Star and the Trem-O-Verb sounds/plays the best to me.

Actually listening to some clips recently, the lead tone can probably get very close to Soldano lead tone. Might have to get one some day.

I own a Mesa/Boogie Mark IV, Recto, and DC-3. Comparing lead tones, side-by-side, my DeYoung OT-equipped Avenger slays them all for leads. I would say that the lead tone out of the Soldano is literally twice as "thick" sounding as the best lead tone from my Mark IV. Yes, TWICE.

An Orange 120 or Sunn Model T or Rivera Knucklehead.
Maybee fender twin reverb.

I dunno for sure as that Soldano just has that percussive snap and sparkle to it.

Either a Marshall 6100 or 2203 with 6550's and a HotMod.

68' Marshall Plexi, or 66' JTM 45. Very expensive no doubt, but oh well.

Then I'd have to run a 65 Amps SoHo with the master defeated. Unbelievable single coil tones with this baby.

I'd probably go back to my Marshall 50 watt Plexi or Bluesbreaker Combo (both stock reissues). I was pretty satisified with them. But then again I only run my SLO's preamp on 2. shocked So those two amps would probably not "do it" for some guys on this forum. undecided

No doubt it would be the XTC101b. I have tried everything from the Diezel on down and I have 4 amps that I will never sell, in order of preference: SLO, Hot Rod 50, 101b, Fender Champ.

Ive tried to like the ecstasy...twice. Just sold my second attempt the other day and immediately picked up a new SLO. If the SLO were not around my next fav would be the marshall jubilee or slash head. Maybe the SLX if I did not have the cash for the others. Most def a Marshall though.

I have other amps and all of them get great tone that I gig with. My current amp seeing most of the play time live is my Marshall Randy Rhoads amp. 100w old style Marshall with no master volume, no loop, no channel switching. I use an Alex's Attenuator with it and hit the front end with a Fulltone OCD pedal. Pure rock tone! My other amps are Bogner Ecstasy and Uberschall as well as Bad Cat Hot Cat 30 and Randall RM100. I've had a Mesa Dual Rect for several years but I prefer just about all these amp to it. Soon I'll be taking out the SLO 100 to gig with, love its tone as well!

I have a MKV, Rectifier, Rivera Knucklehead Tre aside of my SLO. The Rivera would be the one if the SLO was no more. It does not have all the bells and whistles of the MKV, and although the MKV is a swiss army knife amp.... The Rivera has a huge tall clean headroom and crushing high gain. It out rectifies the rectifier. Gain on 2.5 and master on 3.5 of the high gain ch it covers a good Reb Beach / Angus tone. My rig is turning into SLO and Knucklehead at the moment. SLO is the primary tone, add Knuck for Nu-Metal.

I noticed alot of people mentioned the XTC. I just had mine retubed with winged Cs and biased to 32ma and it sounds better than ever (but not as good as my soldanos). Just a FYI

I'd be using a Diezel Einstein (going to put down an order for one soon), an Elmwood Modena 60, Matamp 1224MkII, Fryette Sig: X, Engater Renegade, or an Orange Thunderverb 50.

But, Soldano does exist, so I'm using a Hotrod Avenger 50, and I'll soon own an Einstein 100. Then it's off to buy a Matamp and I'll probably be set then.

I've got a 1983 Marshall JCM800 2X12 Combo. It sounds pretty good and even better through a 4X12. If I did not have an SLO. I think I could make a 100 watt JCM800 head into a 4X12 work for me.

If Soldano didn't exist...
Perhaps the Ampeg VL series (Lee Jackson amps).
I remember trying the VL-1001, which sounded great - screaming rock tone and quite sustainy.
Although that was about 15 years ago, whilst shopping for my HR-50, haha.

i might catch hell for saying this, but i picked up a x100b carvin from the sacramento store that was closing down. bought it new on a whim for a whopping 449 bucks. it's 2 channel, all tube (6l6), digital reverb, switchable boost/reverb/loop/channel, switchable for el34s, active 5-band eq for either channel, effects loop switch for -10, 0, +4db. the cleans are to die for and i've yet to get a bad sound out of it. all while driving 2 evm12l's in a soldano sized 2x12. this thing's bang-for-the-buck is unreal! i keep in my rehearsal room so i wouldn't have to leave the SLO there or lug it back and forth. it doesn't sound exactly like a marshall, but i can run the gain up to 7+ when loud and it doesn't turn to mud like a marshall! i'm really surprised to say it, but i really like the dang thing!

After some heavy Warren Haynes influence, I played and really like PRS amps! I'd still like to try a Cesar Diaz amp, but the PRS was surprisingly good! It could get a really good vintage late 60s sound out of it. I was impressed.

It would be interesting what would be available if not for Soldano, but that is another topic.

I would probably go with one of the CAA 100 series or maybe a Fortin. A Bogner 101B or Cornford MK50H ll would be options as well.

Post by tekbow on Nov 16th, 2011, 9:01pm

Ah there's an array of stuff i'd probably use, but i could see me switching between them a lot, At present, the HR50+ is my only amp and other than an SLO i don't really want another amp with the exception of something superclean like a fender, but then again i don't really do much with that kind of sound.

But for arguments sake, would probably be something in the Hot rodded marshall realm, splawn, maybe a friedman (if i could afford one and could find a uk dealer), like the sound of the cornfords too. I do not like bognors, boogies, diezels, Kranks etc etc, although used to like the old VHT's now Fryettes.
