xx Mesa Single Rectifier
« Thread started on: May 10th, 2012, 1:58pm »

I'm looking for a cheaper replacement for my SLO that I can take on tour (and leave in a van at night) without worrying.

What do you guys think of the Mesa Single Rectifier? Can someone compare the sound with an SLO? Does it have a 'full' sound (for being 'only' 50W). More / less bottom end than the SLO? How about reliability?
Thanks!

I can't imagine not playing my main rig on tour?! sad You have insurance right?

I had a Triaxis (non-Phat mod) years ago and more recently a Roadster and Lonestar. Mesa tone doesn't cut it after playing Soldano.

Speaking to vehicle security, would video surveillance stickers on the vehicle help?

I would look at 5150's. Super cheap and easy to replace if it "walks away".
Plus, as you know, it was derived from the SLO.

We tour low budget, so nobody will believe those stickers laugh
I like the 5150 tone, but the ones I've tried are too noisy and not very reliable huh + I can buy the Single Recto for the same price as a 5150 (a bit more than 1/3 than a SLO! - all prices 2nd hand)
I'm even considering selling the SLO and getting a Rectifier (blasphemy, I know). If only I could find a HotRod100+ for a decent 2nd hand price (in Europe)...

If I was in the market for a very low cost head I actually had to perform with, I might consider a Carvin Legacy III. I actually got to play one a few weeks back and (IMO) I thought it sounded much better than a lot of other amps twice its price.

That said, a good full value insurance policy is even cheaper! Why compromise the Soldano tone if you are protected.

The Single Rec sounds great at low volume IMO. Should be a decent back up though...

What about an HR50 though?

Jet City JCA100HDM

Some of the EL34 tones from this amp (youtube) sound pretty damn good IMO. JJ makes blue glass EL34 tubes. grin

I would use the JCA100H with 6L6s/5881s. The metal grill amps are pretty cool looking.

I have to admit, I'd be willing to give Mesa Boogie another chance with one of their new "Reborn" Dual Rectifiers running EL34s when a situation requires versatility or Soldano tone is too over-the-top. But I'll always use Soldano for hard rock.

Only thing about that, you need the amp modded to use EL34s. Drew only had those in his amp just for the demo and not much more, otherwise it would have blown something for certain. I did like how it sounded, but KT66 tubes can almost give you that EL34 vibe, and is a drop in replacement for the 6L6 tubes it comes with.

And if you're wanting that SLO vibe on the cheap, the JCA100H would be a better choice than a 5150/6505 or the Single Rec.

I've owned my JCA100H for just about two years now, and its fantastic. I sold my 6505+ after I got it wink

I'd look at Jet City. Although Mesa Rec's are great amps, I would not ever say sell the Soldano to get one. I have a Dual Rec, and while I really like it, I never play it and am looking to sell it. If you are interested, PM me. It has a mod that allows adjustable bias by means of a pot on the back so no removal of the chassis is needed. To me, it's the only thing that makes Mesa's useable.

Anyway enough of my shameless plug, if you are looking for a cheaper Soldano alternative while keeping your Soldano, personally I'd look at Jet City 100 or 50 watters.

I have owned Single,Dual and triple Rec's both the two channel versions and the 3 channels versions along with the Recto recording Pre-amps.

This is just my opinion.

A Rec series amp sounds like it has a cover over the cab. meaning it does not sound clear. I think this issue is the reason why so many people run EMG's and P-90's into their Rec's is because of this issue.

I bought a Jet City that was a Prototype with a Onetics Tranny and I was Hooked. After a few months of Gigs with the Jet City and the Abuses of not having a Cover.. I switched to a SLO and never looked back
