...if so, can you recommend a good one and the best place to get it? What type is suitable for a 100 watt head?

Actually, stevestrat has talked several times on how he uses one. He made me really interested in going down that road.

I use one, but probably the other way around as what you are hoping for. I use it to crank up the voltage out of the outlet.
In fact, I bought it used and for cheap to find out if, and how much effect upping the voltage would have. Now that I've found that it really helps in getting the maximum (to my ears at least) out of my amps I've bought a used Furman 2306 ( I think, a now discontinued voltageregulator).

Giga.

I just ordered up a variac, should be here monday, Oct. 5. I'll post how it turns out. Stevestrat says he runs his amp at 110vac and it really smooths things out. It has just as much effect as a speaker change I think is what he posted about it. The voltage coming out of my wall varies, but goes all the way up to 126vac (maybe becasue I live really close to a nuclear power plant), so I'm eager to find out what bringing it down a bit will do.....because now it's really high!

126 volts is fairly common. I use a varic in the studio @ about 108 volts, I like it. keep an eye on your output voltage as it will vary with the input, on most. I try not to drop below 105 volts.
