Although I've never played a Shiva, I'm sure it has plenty of gain. I also don't believe using a ton of gain usually sounds that great. The Shiva is supposed to have a decent amount more gain than a JCM800. I have an XTC and it's a great addition to having an SLO...in fact, I'm getting an A/BY box this week to run the two amps in stereo.

i'm lovin the sounds that i hear from this amp, and i like the simplicity. i think it would be a great amp to sit next to my hot rod. i'm probably gonna wait till i play one, but i can see this amp in my future.

I own an el34 shiva combo. The shiva and my sl-60, which is basically a hot rod 50, sound incredible together. I'm a huge fan of a 2 amp set up when I can get away with it and when I feel up to moving both of them. These 2 amps compliment each other so well, because they excel in different areas. The shiva has this low mid thunk that is unlike any amp I've ever played, while the sl-60 is a bit bright but super articulate. Both have a very jcm800 feel, but at the same time, they're both very different sounding amps. I think the amount of gain for each is very similar.

I've got a 6L6 head and the Shiva is an incredible amp. I've never played an HR50 so I can't make that comparison, but have owned a JCM800 (the other guitar player in my band has one too). Shiva's gain is similar to the Marshall but voiced darker with a low mid growl and much fatter bottom. Bogners are known for prominent low mids and the Shiva is no different. Then on top of that are the amazing cleans that are the real signature of the amp. One thing about Shiva's though... the gain channel can be kind of buzzy at bedroom volume, but it opens up and sings at gig levels.

Be careful. I own a shiva el34 combo and the gain channel is not even close to my Hot Rod 50, and my SLO absolutely blows the shiva away. It's to the point where I only use the shiva for clean, which it does well. I've tried the two amp thing and the SLO alone stills sounds better to me. If you don't have a SLO, that's what you should buy.
