I'm considering buying one of these and blending it with the SLO for recorded tones, but haven't had a chance to play one as there are no dealers in my area.

I had a chance to play an XTC a while back and they’re great sounding amps, but at the time, a tad too dark for my tastes.

I’ll probably get slammed for saying this, but IMHO, the cleans were not good at all, but the rhythm and lead channels rocked as long as you had the boost ON all the time. I found that with the boost off, the note seemed to decay really quickly and then just drop off. Even playing chords,it was very weird. The guy who owned the amp said the same thing, so he just never turned the boost off.

All in all I was diggin’ the sound. The lead channel, channel three, is really great.

I’d like to play one again and see if my first impressions still hold true, but like you, finding one to play is not all that easy.

When you find one to play, let us know what you think of them.

Yeah, I'll let ya guys know if I do ever get a chance to play one. I'm looking to buy one used, as there are no dealers around here that carry their amps. BTW, the trick to the clean channel (from what I've heard) is to max the volume and use the gain knob as a volume.

Just to follow up here...I got a chance to demo an XTC on vacation in Boston. It was the first amp I tried there and it was my favorite of the 3 that I played. I also played a Bogner Uberschall (liked it - nice thick low end, but not as versatile and the mids weren't nearly as sweet - if I played Metal all the time this would be the Bogner to get, but I don't), Orange Rocker 30 (liked it, but couldn't stand the cleans on the amp). Now the XTC had a ton of switches which I didn't really get much of a chance to explore, but absolutely loved the 2nd and 3rd channels on the amp. It was really the only amp I've ever played that is at the level of my SLO. The Bogner was more compressed, had less bite (more smoothness) and responded very well to picking dynamics and touch. Like my SLO, it was a very rewarding amp to play and unforgiving in terms of showing technique - it didn't quite have the definition/clarity of the SLO, but it was in the same league. Anyways...looks like I'll be saving up for one of these. BTW, I've been able to coax some similar sounds to the XTC from my SLO, via EQ changes in the loop to add low mids, but aside from having that hot-rodded Marshall label, they are pretty different sounding amps.

I actually find the SLO more compressed than the XTC's 3rd channel. Both are fairly compressed though. I agree with everything else you've said though and agree that the XTC is an incredible amp. Like the SLO has a signature tone, so does the XTC. Nothing gets that chewy growl like an XTC.

I recently purchased an XTC and it is definately much more compressed than my SLO. The 3rd channel (red channel) is very squishy/compressed sounding and spongy/saggy in feel. It's really the antithesis of an SLO...which, is why I bought it -to have both sides covered. I can't wait to run these 2 in stereo some day! The Bogner has made me appreciate what the SLO does so well. Both great amps.
