This is kind of a broad question but how long in general would it take a small boutique type of amp maker to build an amp. Nothing fancy. Just a straight up single or 2 channel head?

Thanks

It depends. PTP or PCB? Would you have to do all the wood work and tolex job yourself? Would you have a chassis ready or would you have to drill all the holes and stuff?
I'd guess a couple hours just to do the tolex job. The soldering and stuff will probably take at least a couple hours too, but it depends on the circuit.
Building the head shell would take a while too, I guess. I don't know anything about wood working but making the joints, gluing everything... it will probably take a while.

Of course, for a company like Soldano things are probably faster.
The head shells are probably built by the same company that builds the cabinets. Chassis are custom made, already drilled, painted etc. PCB is used so the actual soldering and mounting inside the amp is less time consuming.

I never built anything though, so this is just my guess...

I think Allen amps estimates 15-25 hrs. to build one of their kits, provided you have intermediate soldering skills.

An acquaintance of mine built an incredible sounding amp that took him about 30 hrs., I believe. That includes construction of the headshell, which was made of aluminum.

Construction of the amps is probably no more than a few dozen hours. Design of an amp is several hundred if not over a thousand hours. Unless you're building a clone, amps don't design themselves.

I built an Allen Tonesavor back in 1999. It is a model they currently don't offer, but it is based on a Fender Super Reverb and has some extra drive to it.

I would say it took me about 25 hours to build.

I used this amp up until I received my Decatone. Both are keepers for the foreseeable future.
