xx Do you use any effects?
« Thread started on: Feb 8th, 2004, 01:11am »

Okay, this forum looks sad without any thread. I'll post something, even though only TU BE will read it (at least for now). wink

Currently I'm using a Tube Screamer to boost my Hot Rod 50. It works great as is, I wonder if getting it modded to 808 specs would do much for my tone?I sold my Boss RV-3 Delay/Reverb to buy a Chandler Digital Stereo Echo. The guy suddenly didn't want to ship the thing as we agreed before so I ended up not getting it. rolleyes
Delay is one of my favorite effects so that pissed me off...

I also have an old Marshall DriveMaster and a Boss Super Chorus. I don't use them much, though. Hell, I don't use them at all... but it's cool to have them, if I ever need.
The DriveMaster is a pretty cool pedal. The Guv'Nor is even cooler, I'd like to replace the DriveMaster with one some day. The chorus is ok but I'm sure there's something better out there. I'd like to buy a chorus/flanger pedal and sell the Boss someday, but you know... it's just a chorus pedal and the 80's are gone. grin
I have seen a local fusion player using an Arion SCH1 Stereo Chorus. He used it for some leslie/vibrato effect, when playing SRV tunes. I was impressed, and plan to get one of those in the future. Too bad they're a little pricey, when I do find one around here. It sounds cool, but it's not worth $100 (IMO) and I refuse to pay that.
A wah pedal would be cool too. I had a Morley Bad Horsie but didn't like it much. I would like to try a RMC wah in the future. The RMC2 sounds like a great pedal, feature-wise. If it sound as good people say, it's a keeper.

So... a perfect pedal board for me would be something like this:
  • RMC2 Wah;
  • Ibanez Tube Screamer TS9 (AnalogMan mod?);
  • Arion SCH1 Stereo Chorus;
  • TC Electronics SCF and Fulltone Choralflanger are supposed to be good... something like that;
  • Chandler Digital Stereo Echo;
  • Peterson Strobo Stomp (is that the name?).

So... what do you use?

please tell me you don't need the Tube Screamer to get good tone at live stage volumes with your Hot Rod 50(please please please no)

I want a Hot Rod 50 but with amp only distortion for live. For home I'd use a pedal, but every pedal I've used live sucked the impact out of my amp. Although, and this is a big point, the only thing I used for distortion a long time ago, was an old orange Boss distortion in front of the clean channel on my old 50W Marshall solid state. Now, for my tastes even as a solid state, putting the gain control on 10 on the Gain channel makes the amp more punchy and gets me what I want instead of the pedal. Back then that amp distortion wasn't enough, but now it sounds decent enough to me, for now. Maybe tube amps are different.

the only thing I think I'll need is some sort of delay for playing live, as a special effect. I want to go pretty dry for most things because now I care more about detail within Marshall-like crunch quick rythym parts. For a lead boost, I don't know what I'm going to do yet. A very loooong time ago I used a Digitech digital FX rackmount thing, I think the DSP 128; for delays, chorus reverb etc...Every second I was playing, I had some sort of heavy overdone reverb or crap on my sound. This was like 15 years ago though. That Digitech thing sucked tone like crazy. I didn't know squat back then and didn't care about Tone (capital T), I just wanted booze and more booze.

I currently have a Digitech X-series DigiDelay, Marshall BluesBreaker II and an SD-1. I rarely use any of them though. Sometimes if I'm in the mood, I'll plug into the low input and use the BB2 or SD-1.

I usually add delay post recording so the DigiDelay doesn't get much use. Everytime I think I wanna sell it I break it out and use it and end up keeping it.

I know... I'm a bedroom wanker. grin
Seriously, I'm not playing with a band nor giggin' so I can't really push the amp into the zone.
Works great with the Tube Screamer, though. Too bad I can't record anything to show you... embarassed

Oh, I forgot one... I also have a SansAmp Tri AC. I bought it to play without annoying my family. For a long time I played with it direct into my PC/Stereo. Works fine to record too, but it always sounds like it was recorded direct... with a certain harshness on the high end or something.
I'm not using it now, though. Maybe I should sell it and buy some recording gear... a SM57 and some kind of mic pre or mixer..?

I sold a whole rack worth of gear, including most of my effects to buy my SLO, so when I got it I pretty much had to run dry. I've played with some effects since, but everything I've tried kills the tone of the amp. I'd run dry 90% of the time anyway, so I hate to invest in some mega-$ effects system that sounds good in the loop that I use 2-3 times a gig. (There's no doubt that the loop is fairly limited and very unforgiving in the SLO.)

Actually, I want to track down a good sounding wah to run in front of the amp. I have a Snarling Dogs Whine-O-Wah that works very well in front of a clean amp, but it doesn't work so well into a high gain channel. I want to try the Teese Wizard but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I have tried a boost pedal in front of the SLO. The lead channel doesn't need it, but the clean/crunch channel responds very well to it. Setting it up for a heavy crunch and then boosting the input signal reminds me a lot of an old Marshall 2203.

I use a marshall BB-2 pedal infront of my road king to give it a treble boost. It sounded like ass infront of my hotrod!!!

I haven't tried anything else, but am wondering what to use to give the amp a volume boost for solos? I haven't gigged with the hotrod yet for fear of this. I can turn the volume down on my guitar to clean it up - although this amp doesn't clean up very well with a les paul!

I'm using a Tube Screamer, and it works great. If you turn the gain all the way down and crank the volume, it gives you a nice volume boost. You can also use the tone control to add more bite too.

I have a V-WAH, Boss compressor and boost pedal in front of my Decatone.

Not many pedals work in the FX loop (I've owned a Yamaha T100, HR50, and a Decatone). sad I've recently discovered the Yamaha MagicStomp and it sounds really good, though. The MS and a BBE Stinger live in the loop these days.

grinI use the sd-1 and bb-2 as well, but they do not add much to a already increadable distortion, I mostly use for a different color or just alittle, I do mean alittle boost. I am currently running a UD Stomp, I use to run a DG STOMP, but the amp modeling makes everything way too digital sounding for my tastes( I do run it without the pre amp on ) Still, eh? I also run a Snarling Dogs Black Bawls and sometimes a Jimi Hendrix FuzzWha, only on certain songs. HR 50 is the amp, running thru a 4 x 10 Marshall cab and a 2 x 12 matching Marshall cab. I love my HR 50. Enuff said

IMHO, the SLO do not need any OD in front. I've tried out some just for fun, always the same result: The tone suffer.
My only fx with the SLO is a Budda Wah. I use this occasionaly for some tone-tweaking for leads. Just to cut through "even better" in the mix with the band.
The Budda sounds real nice!

I've also tried out some reverb in the loop (like an old Fender, or Matchless tube reverbs), but I just don't like anything to "mess" with this amps tone.
For my taste, I better let the PA handle that thing....
But, for clean tones, a nice reverb "is" cool.

Btw, the "best" OD I've tried out yet is the Soldano Supercharger GTO. It sounds GREAT on my old non-master Marshalls and Matchy amps. This OD is killer, and the first one that I feel sounds "real".

I can't imagion using any O.D./distortion pedal with my Decatone. But then, I don't have to worry about bothering the neighbors either. When you can crank this thing up and let it breath, it's unbelievable. Any stompbox would be a big step down.
I use a Digitech X-series Digidelay in the loop for just a touch of delay on leads and it works well. The Digitech Digiverb doesn't like the Decatone's loop much. You have to turn the loop mix on 100% or you get a strange phase thing happening (kind of nasally/phasey). I got the same issue with my Lexicon 500. Might be cool for one song, but not all the time.
