I'm just gonna paste in my post from harmonycentral about speakers in case it helps....

I am running a Soldano Astroverb into an Avatar 2x12 with a V30 and a G12H30.
I have played and recorded each speaker individually to hear how they compare to each other.

- G12H30 is smooth with plenty of bass and lots of presence.
- V30 is compressed, has TONS of mids, lacks some bass and lacks high presence.
It has a bit of a gritty raspyness that makes power chords grind, but puts buzz in your lead tone if used alone.

The G12H30 sounds louder than the V30- perhaps because of its higher presence output?
It is not a real subtle difference either, the G12H30 is definitely louder than the V30.

I think this perceived volume difference is why the smooth high frequencies of the G12H30 overpower and hide the raspyness of the V30 resulting in a nice smooth lead tone.

But you do still hear the V30's rasp for chords and its additional mids- which go missing with an all G12H30 setup.

The V30 sounds very compressed, like it's under a blanket, but live players say it cuts well in a live situation because of it's mids. I don't know firsthand because I've never been in the audience while I was playing on stage!

I consider the distortion sound of the G12H30 "natural" and the V30 "congested".

I really prefer the G12H30. The V30 is so compressed it sounds like the Marshall channel of my Johnson J Station.

After recording each of the speakers separately I thought that I dont like the V30, but I found out that the G12H30 DOES need to be complimented by the V30 to get that "holy grail" perfect sound- it needs the V30's midrange and grit for high gain chords or "that sound" is just not there.

I would call the clean tone of the G12H30 "warm" and the V30 just "slightly sterile", in comparison, but it's really not that bad.

While the V30 has more midrange than other speakers, I really think the biggest difference from other speakers is that it has MUCH LESS presence.

My comparisons were done at a high bedroom volume- and so is the majority of my playing.

So I would be kind of surprised if there is any better speaker combination than V30 + G12H30 because they compliment each other perfectly.

The G12H30 gives you smoothness and the presence and bass that the V30 lacks and
the V30 gives you a little grit for chords, yet its gritty lead tone is covered by the G12H30's smooth lead tone due to having more presence than the V30.

I would also recommend Weber beam blockers for for all of them, but that may just be my personal taste.

I use a variety of cabs (Voodoo & Bogner 4x12's, Bogner 2x12, and 2 Bogner cubes). Right now the HR50 is running through the cubes and it sounds fantastic IMHO.

I think this is my first post on this forum. Anyway, I first ran my Avenger through a Marshall 1960 AX re-issue 25 watt, it sounded ok, but definitely would get muddy. Next, I used the real deal of the same cabinet from 1972. This sounded great, but I still thought the Avenger could sound even better. Enter the VHT 2x12 Fatbottom - Unbelievable. The Avenger through this bottom is the heaviest sound I've heard. I did not try the VHT 4x12 Fatbottom, but this 2x12 smoked the standard VHT 4x12 hands down. I don't know about the other Soldano's, but the Avenger never sounded better - killer!! grin

Good to know! I've always wanted to try a VHT fatbottom cab. Did it have the P50E eminences in it? I hear they are basically eminence legends, which are what soldano puts in their cabs, though some say they are quite different and not the same speaker at all.

I have the P50E eminences, which I think is what VHT currently uses in the Fatbottom. I really don't know what the hell they do to make the "Fatbottom" so crushing, but it really is. I was thinking my Avenger could not get "heavy" enough, before I went to another highgain head, I tried this 2x12 I can't believe how awsome the Avenger sounds. I can honestly say now my Avenger lives up to all the hype behind it!! I don't know too much about Soldano cabs, but it would be great if they had a cab like this.

I have used old Marshall cabs with GB's "all years", and still think these cabs are just "it".
Big, greasy, crunchy, woody and crispy tones, suits the SLO just great.
I've tried out or used some other cabs as well, like Bogner 412's, newer Marshalls (V-30's, 75's), Soldano 412's (V-30, G12H-30 or old GB's), Matchless, etc....
Still, I favour the old Marshalls for better "tone".

Btw, Soldano also makes great cabs. I still have a slant 412 with GB's (sold off another), which is good.
But the old Marshalls are always used as the "No-1" cabs.

I also have an Avatar 412 that I`m considering putting 4 legend v12`s in it. I also have a Hot Rod 50+. HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR SPEAKER/CAB MATCHUPS ? Thought I would open this old thread and kick it around some!

Okay, then, I'll participate. I've been using an old ADA split stack slant 2x12 with 2 Eminence V12 Legends for years now with my SLO. Very happy with it's ease of transport and the incredible sound.
