first off, stainless steel frets blow nickel-silver frets out of the water, imho, in both feel and durability. the prs stoptail has never been a good design to me, either. string through guitars have much more sustain available. i'd like to upgrade the electronics to the rs guitarworks super-pots. the mccarty pickups do nothing for me; i prefer the dragon IIs, but will probably go with a seymour duncan alnico pro/jazz combo. oh, and i don't like the look of keystone tuners on anything but a gibson. all in all, the mccarty is pretty far from what i want. but the wide-fat neck in indian rosewood is killer!

frets: agree
Bridge: def agree
Pickups: agree!!!!!!!!!!! (go for BKP's tho)
Neck: yeah i use to be a thin neck shred head, but those wide fats def have something

i say go for it, its looks like its gona cost you less than a top of the line Cu24. only thing to consider is that you're murdering an early mcarty wink and it'll kill resale, but if it truly is you're dream guitar, then that won't matter

angry, for a PRS this wasnt a bad deal at all, in fact it was excellent, also there's just something about that shape, sometimes you just gotta have a certain shape for your guitar and nothing else comes close..

mabye stripping back some of that polyester and thinskinning it will improve the resonance?

no offense taken. it's just that prs will not build my dream guitar, so the only other option is to have it built or go without.

So you want someone else to build the perfect guitar from scratch?

I had the idea in my head that you bought the PRS in the hope that you would send it off to a luthier (or do it yourself) and have it modified completely. Which, to me, seems silly. But that's just my opinion - and I don't mean that to detract from your plans.

That's fair enough. Maybe I'm just at a stage in my life where I don't really know what I want. Everyday my tastes change, so there is no perfect guitar. embarassed

no no thats fair enough mate, thats why i have three guitars and counting, they all do different specific things, im not a fan of one particular kind of music or having a do it all guitar because i dont think one guitsr can.

my strat with texas specials is getting a hell of a lot of hendrixy/SRV play atm

i'm not looking to have it done from scratch; it's modifying this one that i'm considering. as for 'murdering', yes it's been considered, too (along with the negative resale value). this isn't an 'early' mccarty; in fact, it's a 2005 20th anniversary (you can barely see the relief logo on the truss rod cover) that was bought new just last year. so there's some bareknuckle fans around here, huh?

I'm sure you know... but there are lots of actual guitar builders out there. Could build you what ever you want.

She looks good as is.

Those mods will ruin any resale should that day come. A custom build will hold.

I'm always messin whith stuff too. Ruined plenty of guitars and amps.

My 2 cents, look long and hard at custom luthers.

Cool concept. I would say leave well enough alone, though- that's a lot of cash up on top- if she doesn't end up sounding like you hope though- esp. after 500 dollar X 2 or 3 modifications- that would be very disappointing.

I set up a guitar for slide once- thought I would never sell it. Fast forward 7 years and it is gone- original nut was trashed so needed to get new one. See a lot of custom.one-off guitars for sale on ebay and forums- it's sad.

i hear ya. i value the feel of the guitar over the sound; the sound i can change, but the feel is what it is, and it's gonna take money to get it. i'm still undecided, but the cheesy ms paint up there still makes my mouth water... oh yeah, imagine indian rosewood pickup rings, knobs and switch tip...
